Location: Ano Steni - Mt Dirfis
Prefecture: Evia
Ano Steni (450m) is built in a rather beautiful and imposing location and constitutes an ideal starting point for treks on Mt Dirfis and Mt Xirovouni. It has hotels and taverns alongside the river that goes through the village.
Day 1: Ano Steni - EOS refuge - Agali Gorge - Agios Athanassios.
(alternatively: with or without an ascent on Delfi peak of Mt Dirfis)
The route starts from Ano Steni. We follow the main road, go past the “springs of giatrou” (“the doctor’s springs”) and reach a football field. Right behind it we find the way-marked trail. The first part of the trail crosses a pine forest mixed with heather, arbutus and holly-oaks. As we climb up we come across the spring of ‘Sikamino’, where the water runs out of the bottom of a rock. We eventually come to an old dirt track. The view to the pyramid of Dirfis and Xirovouni from here is breathtaking. After a while we reach ‘Elatia’, a thick fir forest which we cross before arriving at the mountain refuge (1100m). From the refuge the path takes us to the bottom of the pyramid. To our left we see the path that leads to the top. At the next ridge we start descending. We traverse to the right and downhill. The path will take us to the beginning of a dirt track. We follow it for half an hour, walk past a sheepfold until we reach the spring of ‘Kratia’. The trail leaves the road to the right, descends through a thick fir forest and within an hour we reach the gorge of Agali. We walk downhill through this beautiful gorge for about an hour. The gorge exits above the village of Aghios Athanassios. The ascent route of this trail is marked Σ1 while the descent is marked A1.

Duration: 2h30 ascent, 4 hrs descent
Grade: no special equipment is required, apart from hiking boots.
Ascent: 650m / Descent: 900m
Alternative option: ascent to the peak of Delfi via the “Liri” saddle, where a marked path leads to the top of Dirfis. It is a steep climb and an equally steep descent and they last 1hrs30 respectively.
The 650metres climbed in 1hrs30 require a good physical condition while the gradient needs special attention, especially during the descent. The wind, which is bearable at the altitude of 1100m, becomes rather dangerous higher up when combined with the steep gradient, the rocky terrain and the lack of experience or good physical condition. Where there is snow, adequate climbing equipment and experience is necessary.
Day 2: Kabia – Xirovouni – Ano Steni
We reach the village of Kabia from the junction between Ano and Kato Steni. Our trek starts from there. We follow the road from the south part of the village leading to Mavropoulo and Mistro (dirt track). We walk for 20 minutes and join a path that goes left and up. At the point where we can view the village again we turn left and traverse uphill, parallel to the visible ridge-line of Xirovouni. It takes an hour from here to reach the top of the mountain (1400m) and another hour to come back down to the same point. From here we follow the path to the mountain refuge until we come up to a fork. The path splits to the left. We walk through fir trees until the spring of ‘Kalovrissi’. We continue downhill, through a lush gorge with plane and fir trees. We reach a forest track and follow it for 20 min. It brings us to the spring ‘vrisi tou giatrou’, above Ano Steni.
Duration: Kabia-Xirovouni peak: 5hrs, Xirovouni-Ano Steni: 3h30. Total time: 8h30 (if we skip the ascent to Xirovouni we save 2 hours).
Ascent: 900m / Descent: 950m
Recommend season: All year round, weather permitting. When there is snow the above routes can become dangerous for inexperience or ill-equipped people.
Ideal season: April-June (with no ascent on Dirfis in the snow). From June onwards for the top.
This two-day trekking tour is suitable for nature lovers with no particular experience of mountain walking. The routes are beautiful, well-marked and not very demanding. In the aesthetic forest of Steni we can admire a plenitude of both rare and common albeit beautiful flowers.
