Apart from its renowned ancient civilization, remains of which we still find all over the island, Evia also displays a rich and vivid contemporary cultural activity.
Chalkida is known to be the town of the world-renowned composer Skalkotas, the literary man Skaribas, etc.
All over Evia and Skyros a number of cultural associations work with a view to preserving the cultural identity of the region.
They organise events and revive the local customs. Some of the most well-known events are:
- The Mesapeia, at the beginning of July in Psachna
- Kizikeia, at the end of August in Nea Artaki
- The custom of the Kamara, on Easter Monday in Aliveri
- The traditional feast of Kimi, on August 15th.
- The Nautical Week in Chalkida and Kimi, in the middle of August.
- The Cherry festivities in Metochi and the squid festivities in Chiliadou, in May and in July respectively.
- The carnival of Skyros and the re-enactment of the traditional wedding ceremony of Skyros.
- The theatre festival in April and the custom of the Makarounas during the carnival period in Karystos.
- The international festival of Edipsos at the end of June and the festivities of the Elimnia at the beginning of August in Limni, where there is an active cine-club.
